Ankylosing Spondylitis: Arthritis of the Spine

Peter Winslow, Life Coach

Peter Winslow began his career as life coach more than two decades ago and helps people remove obstacles that make it difficult for them to achieve health, happiness, and wealth. The founder of the Ankylosing Spondylitis Victors Association (ASVA), Peter Winslow also offers guidance in overcoming chronic pain and depression associated the condition, as what followed his own diagnosis.

A degenerative autoimmune disorder, ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that affects the spine and causes inflammation between the vertebrae and the joints between the spine and pelvis. People with AS frequently experience chronic pain in the lower back, and the condition can lead the vertebrae to fuse over time, reducing spine flexibility and creating a hunched-forward posture.
Medications can help relieve symptoms and prevent the disease from worsening, but no cure exists for AS. Many patients may also experience anxiety or depression after receiving an AS diagnosis due to the realities of living with chronic pain and the physical limitations brought on by the condition. Anxiety and depression can in turn make pain worse and increase the difficulty of learning to cope.
People with AS can also join support groups and associations for the condition, such as the ASVA. These groups can help people regain control of their lives and teach them coping strategies for combating depression.
