Why Does A Breakup Hurt So Much?

· love,relationships

I’m life coach and counselor Peter Winslow. Many of my life coaching clients have asked me why a breakup has to hurt so much, and you may have wondered about that too. It takes time to get over the loss of a significant relationship, and it can take what sometimes feels like forever to heal. Yet we can move the process along much more swiftly by facing and overcoming our fears.

Here are some of the fears we may feel after a breakup: fear of being alone; fear of what the future will hold; fear of what others will think; fear of failing; fear of rejection; fear of dating again; fear of losing connections with others that were related to the relationship; fear of having to start over; fear of being financially ok; fear of seeing your kids less; fear of having to redefine your life, and more.

All these fears can be summed up in just one statement: I don’t know who I am beyond this relationship. Find the authentic answer to that and your breakup issues will soon be behind you.

Fear hides on many levels, and can appear as anger, resentment, blame, shame, sadness, loss, or guilt. These emotions will keep you stuck and mask your true identity. We can only get past these things by letting go of the past and creating a clear intention to move forward.

Realize that when you let go of the anger, resentment, blame, shame, sadness, loss, and guilt, your fears will also fall away. That’s a big realization, and a huge step forward.
